Upon arrival
We can either meet you in person, and give you a quick walkthrough of the house, or you can check in on your own with a personal code on the main enatrance door and just let us know if you have any questions.
Take your time to go through the house, put the lights on and boost the heat pump if it's cold. It's an old house, so you might want warm socks (by the door) or a blanket until it heats up properly.
If you need any more bed linen than we already put out, you'll find it in the large drawers in the laundry room. There should be plenty in stock of most things, and we trust that you use what you need to be comfortable and not any excessive amounts of hot water, electricity or linen and towels.
The door will automatically lock after 30 minutes. If the door is not properly closed, a message will play saying “motor jam” and will not lock until you push the door properly shut.
Heating
We always check the forecasts and put some heat on before you get here, so don’t worry about arriving to a cold house.
There's cables in the tiled floors in the hallway and bathrooms. It should be enough to put the thermostats on 21-25 to get the temperatures you want. It takes 4-6 hours before you can feel the difference, so please have patience with it.
The heat pump in the living room will be more efficient and so will the panel ovens in each bed room. Make sure these are not covered or close to bags or any other things. The individual ovens in each room are controlled remotely as well as locally. Please keep them at a reasonable temperature and let us know if you need extra warm duvets or covers for the beds.
In the garden "gapahuk", there's a timer on the wall to activate the heat lamp. Press this first, and then use the remote control to turn it on. When the time is up it will switch off automatically.
The fireplace
The fireplace is a great heat source on the colder days. Make sure you understand how it works or have some experience in lighting a fire in a fireplace built on an old chimney. We are happy to show you how to light it up without smoking out the whole house. Just let us know if you have any doubts.
Main rules are
Use only proper fire wood and the ignition cubes/bags in the basket. We provide you with some, and more can be bought.
Make sure the yield is fully open, and if it's not too cold outside, it might help to air the room for a minute to get more oxygen to work with.
Put 2-3 logs in (not to little, not too much) and place 1-2 white light bags/cubes on the top. Stack a few smaller sticks on top and light up.
Pro tip: Light a small stick and hold it up towards the back to kick start the proper drafts in the chimney before you light the stack on fire.
NB! Do not put paper or other flammable material in the fireplace. This can cause dangerous fumes and chimney fires.
Keep the door slightly open until it catches on fire properly. Make sure to close the door instantly and completely if there's a lot of smoke forming that comes out through the door, rather than up through the chimney.
Let us know if you want help or instructions and we'll come by and give you a crash course in surviving the Norwegian winter.
